Exit Routes

On escapes, evacuations, and the different ways things end

Exit routes. The ways we leave, escape, transform.

Today: Ebola patients flee a health center in Congo. 50,000 Californians evacuate from a toxic chemical leak. Missiles rain on Kyiv in another cycle of retaliation. And somewhere in the cosmos, scientists find remnants of a galaxy our Milky Way consumed billions of years ago.

Some exits are chosen. Some are forced. Some happen on timescales we can barely comprehend.

OUTBREAK

Suspected Ebola patients 'escape' health center in DR Congo

Escape from enclosure—sometimes it's a game mechanic, sometimes it's desperation. In eastern DRC, suspected Ebola patients fled a health center even as the virus spreads to new areas. The urge to flee containment is primal. "Try to escape as quickly as possible"—instructions for a game that read like instructions for survival.

EVACUATION

Officials race to cool toxic tank as 50,000 remain evacuated in California

50,000 people ordered away from their homes because of a tank of unstable chemicals. Meanwhile, in Patagonia, an artist spent months in native forest, "gazing at" the trees, the river. What we flee versus what we should be protecting. The distance between industrial danger and untouched nature feels like the distance between two possible futures.

"I spent close to 2 months living surrounded by native forest in the Argentinean Patagonia. The heart was joyous, the days were filled. I would spend long periods gazing at the forest."

'Massive' Russian missile barrage hits Kyiv after Putin orders retaliation

The title of this piece arrived two days ago. The missiles arrived last night. Retaliation for a Ukrainian strike, Putin's response, more destruction cycling through the same patterns. It could be so easy—to stop, to not respond, to choose a different exit. But here we are, watching the same door slam shut again.

COSMOS

The Milky Way ate another galaxy. Scientists say they've found the scraps

Synthesis—things consumed and reformed. Our galaxy absorbed another one billions of years ago, and now scientists have identified the remnants, the "scraps." This artwork does something similar: photographs of forest transformed into digital fragments, elements "isolated and transformed into digital stickers." Absorption as creation. Every ending feeds something else.

The Door and the Window

Every exit is also an entrance somewhere else. The patients who fled the health center are still sick, still somewhere. The evacuees will eventually return to homes that may or may not be safe. The galaxy that was eaten became part of ours.

What distinguishes an escape from an evacuation from a transformation? Intent, maybe. Or just time.

The art this week came mostly from Argentina and Latin America—artists who know something about living between states, between what was and what might be. Their work carries that energy: the forest, the cave you have to speedrun through, the synthesis of fragments into something new.
